TRAI releases Telecom Subscription Data as on 30th September, 2021

In the month of September, 2021, 10.10 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 628.15 million at the end of August-21 to 638.25 million at the end of September-21, since implementation of MNP.

Number of active wireless subscribers (on the date of peak VLR#) in September, 2021 was 995.67 million.

The number of telephone subscribers in India decreased from 1,209.58 million at the end of August-21 to 1,189.15 million at the end of September-21, thereby showing a monthly decline rate of 1.69%. Urban telephone subscription decreased from 671.31 million at the end of August-21 to 659.09 million at the end of September-21 and the rural subscription decreased from 538.28 million to 530.06 million during the same period. The monthly decline rates of urban and rural telephone subscription were 1.82% and 1.53% respectively during the month of September-21.

The overall Tele-density in India decreased from 88.45% at the end of August-21 to 86.89% at the end of September-21. The Urban Tele-density decreased from 141.52% at the end of August-21 to 138.72% at the end of September-21 and Rural Tele-density also decreased from 60.27% to 59.33% during the same period. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total number of telephone subscribers at the end of September-21 was 55.43% and 44.57% respectively.

As may be seen in the above chart, nine LSA have less tele-density than the all India average tele-density at the end of September-21. Delhi service area has maximum tele-density of 269.76% and the Bihar service area has minimum tele-density of 53.59% at the end of September-21.

As can be seen in the above tables, in wireless segment, on monthly basis all circles have registered decline rate in their subscriber base during the month of September, 2021. On yearly basis, except circle ‘Metro’, all circles have registered growth rate in their subscriber base.

In Wireline segment, both on monthly and yearly basis, Circles of all categories have registered growth rate in their subscriber base.

Total wireless subscribers decreased from 1,186.72 million at the end of August-21 to 1,166.02 million at the end of September-21, thereby registering a monthly decline rate of 1.74%. Wireless subscription in urban areas decreased from 650.39 million at the end of August- 21 to 637.89 million at the end of September-21 and wireless subscription in rural areas also decreased from 536.33 million to 528.13 million during the same period. Monthly decline rates of urban and rural wireless subscription were -1.92% and -1.53% respectively.

The Wireless Tele-density in India decreased from 86.78% at the end of August-21 to 85.20% at the end of September-21. The Urban Wireless Tele- density decreased from 137.11% at the end of August-21 to 134.26% at the end of September-21 and Rural Tele-density also decreased from 60.05% to 59.11% during the same period. The share of urban and rural wireless subscribers in total number of wireless subscribers was 54.71% and 45.29% respectively at the end of September-21.

As on 30th September, 2021, the private access service providers held 89.99% market share of the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 10.01%.

All service areas have showed decline in their wireless subscribers during the month of September-21.

Active wireless subscribers (VLR Data)
Out of the total wireless subscribers (1,166.02 million), 995.67 million wireless subscribers were active on the date of peak VLR in the month of September-21. The proportion of active wireless subscribers was approximately 85.39% of the total wireless subscriber base.

Bharti Airtel has the maximum proportion (97.86%) of its active wireless subscribers (VLR) as against its total wireless subscribers (HLR) on the date of peak VLR in the month of September-21 and MTNL has the minimum proportion of VLR (18.58%) of its HLR during the same period.

Mobile Number Portability(MNP)
Intra-service area Mobile number portability (MNP) was implemented first in Haryana service area w.e.f. 25.11.2010 and in the rest of the country w.e.f. 20.01.2011. Inter-Service Area MNP has been implemented in the country w.e.f. 03.07.2015. Now, the wireless telephone subscribers can retain their mobile numbers when they relocate from one service area to another.

During the month of September-21, a total of 10.10 million requests were received for MNP. Out of total 10.10 million new requests, 6 million requests received from Zone-I and 4.09 million requests received from Zone-II. The cumulative MNP requests increased from 628.15 million at the end of August- 21 to 638.25 million at the end of September-21, since the implementation of MNP.

In MNP Zone-I (Northern and Western India), the highest number of requests till date have been received in Maharashtra (about 52.69 million) followed by Uttar Pradesh-East (about 46.24 million) service area.

In MNP Zone-II (Southern and Eastern India), the highest number of requests till date have been received in Karnataka (about 50.55 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh (about 48.69 million).

Wireline subscribers
Wireline subscribers increased from 22.86 million at the end of August-21 to 23.13 million at the end of September-21. Net increase in the wireline subscriber base was 0.27 million with a monthly growth rate of 1.19%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 91.66% and 8.34% respectively at the end of September, 2021.

The Overall Wireline Tele-density in India, increased from 1.67% at the end of August-21 to 1.69% at the end of September-21. Urban and Rural Wireline Tele-density were 4.46% and 0.22% respectively during the same period.

BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, held 45.98% of the wireline market share as on 30th September, 2021.

Broadband (≥ 512 Kbps download)
As per the information received from 522 operators in September 2021 in comparison to 499 Operator in August 2021, the total Broadband Subscribers decreased from 813.47 million at the end of August-21 to 794.88 million at the end of September-21 with a monthly decline rate of 2.29%. Segment-wise broadband subscribers and their monthly growth rates are as below: –

Top five service providers constituted 98.70% market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of September-21. These service providers were Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (428.78 million), Bharti Airtel (207.30 million), Vodafone Idea (122.37 million), BSNL (24.15 million) and Atria Convergence (1.96 million).

As on 30th September, 2021, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL (5.05 million), Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (3.94 million), Bharti Airtel (3.85 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.96 million) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (1.08 million).

As on 30th September, 2021, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (424.84 million), Bharti Airtel (203.45 million), Vodafone Idea (122.36 million), BSNL (19.10 million) and Tikona Infinet Ltd. (0.30 million).
