TRAI Chief RS Sharma Says Telcos Free To Decide Tariffs In Line With Competition

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chief RS Sharma, in an interview, said that telcos are free to revise their tariffs in line with the market forces and the regulator does not have to interfere in the business of the operators.

Sharma told the paper that the industry has to find sustainable ways to cope with financial difficulties and said there is not much scope for TRAI in determining tariffs.

Sharma said the telcos need to take decisions in line with their requirements, and financial positions and asserted that it is the competition that will decide tariffs, not the regulator.

On the debt levels of the telecom industry, Sharma told the paper that TRAI has sought a reduction in the tax burden.―CNBC TV18
