Tencent’s WeChat mini programs users grew 13% last year

Tencent Holdings’ Weixin, China’s dominant messaging app, which became WeChat outside the country, stated on Thursday that average daily active users for its mini programs hit 450 million in 2021.

According to previous Tencent figures, this represents a 13% increase than a year earlier, a much slower rate than the 33% growth in 2020.

Tencent’s efforts to grow its e-commerce operations, with the mini programs that look and operate much like apps on Apple Inc’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems, but are less data intensive, are essential to Tencent’s efforts to build its e-commerce operations.

Over the past two years, weixin noted that the number of active mini programs operated by overseas merchants has increased 268%, with total transaction volumes per program increasing 897% over the same period of time.

It also stated that more than 700 million users have eluded Weixin mini programs designed to combat the epidemic, such as ones used to purchase COVID-19 tests used by authorities, at its annual developers conference in Guangzhou.

Tencent saw revenue rise by 13 percent in the third quarter, which was the slowest increase since it went public in 2004 due to a regulatory crackdown that has affected its games pipeline and app updates. List23
