Telstra claims 5G rollout ahead of schedule, 47 cities covered

The company’s Network Engineering executive Channa Seneviratne said in a blog post that the telco had aimed at covering 35 cities by June.

He said users had already downloaded about 660 terabytes over the 5G network.

“This significant milestone means that more than 700 suburbs across Australia are now more than 50% covered by 5G, with some covered up to 100% ahead of schedule,” Seneviratne claimed.

His blog post was made on the same day that Telstra released its latest 5G mobile broadband modem: the Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro, which supports mmWave 5G.

But there are no real-life sites for testing this modem as mmWave will not be auctioned off until next year.

Said Seneviratne: “…we already have three test sites live on our network, [and] if you happen to live near one of these locations and own a Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro, you might accidentally find yourself benefitting from the next iteration of 5G before anyone else in Australia.”
