Telecom service providers directed to remove obstructions along NH 29

The Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Chümoukedima has directed telecom service providers to remove any obstructions causing nuisance to the public along the National Highway 29 within 30 days.

An order issued by the EAC today said that various telecom services providers have placed their overhead cables at numerous locations along the National Highway 29 stretching from Purana Bazaar area till Chümoukedima Town in a very haphazard manner which is causing unnecessary obstruction and nuisance to the general public.

“The service providers are legally obligated to ensure that sufficient measures have been taken to mitigate public inconvenience and ensure public safety at all times while laying/ placing cables or any infrastructure as per the rules stipulated under the Indian Telegraph Right of Way Rules, 2016,” the order reminded.

It further noted that the service providers have failed to intimate the appropriate authority while carrying out laying/ placing of such cables, thereby causing undue public inconvenience.

“Therefore, in the interest of public service and as empowered under Section 133 of the CrPC, 1973 and Rule 13 of the Indian Telegraph Right of Way Rules, 2016,” the EAC directed all the telecom service providers to remove the aforementioned obstructions/nuisance within a period of 30 days and place them as per the prescribed manner and fashion in consultation with the appropriate authority.

“Failing which, the said cables will be removed and the defaulting service providers will be penalized accordingly,” it cautioned. The Morung Express
