Telecom operators urged to prioritize QoS as they expand 5G networks

Telecom operators in India have been advised by a senior official from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to prioritize quality-of-service (QoS) as they expand their 5G networks across the country. Meenakshi Gupta, a member of TRAI, emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of service as networks expand and coverage increases.

Speaking at the Digital Telco Summit – 2023, organized by ETTelecom and the TRAI Centre of Studies and Research, Gupta stressed that QoS is crucial for building trust with consumers and ensuring utility. She noted that QoS should not be seen as an incidental outcome of network implementation but should be embedded into every layer of every network segment to achieve the required level of performance.

Gupta highlighted the need for 5G networks to meet the service quality requirements of emerging applications such as gaming and augmented reality. These applications require unlimited bandwidth and consistent QoS regardless of the number of users on the network at any given time. She also emphasized the importance of allocating common resources without impacting the QoS of other services.

Failure to meet QoS requirements can have serious consequences, particularly for critical use cases like remote surgery, Gupta warned. Therefore, telecom operators must ensure that the expansion of 5G networks does not result in a decline in service quality. ISP
