Telecom gear certification must be integral to production ecosystem

Testing and certification of telecom products should be an integral part of the production ecosystem to ensure that India becomes a manufacturing hub, said K. Rajaraman, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications.

In a webinar hosted by the Telecom Engineering Center (TEC), Rajaraman further said that “for the strong capacity of the test facility, skill set is required to meet the requirements of the manufacturing center”.

TEC is a national telecom standard-setting body under the Department of Telecommunications of the Ministry of Communications. The telecom secretary urged the industry to explore the innovative idea of using existing lab equipment across the country through the ‘A-Service’ model along the lines of cab aggregators Ola and Uber through a platform-based model for testing.

The DoT announced in 2021 an extensive list of telecom products that would require mandatory testing and certification before being sold in the country. These products may only be imported, sold or used after obtaining a certificate from a recognized lab.

Mandatory testing and certification of telecom equipment regulation Phase-3, starting July 1, 2022, includes products such as smartwatches, tracking devices, smart cameras, smart electricity meters and base tower stations for telecom networks. Other. Defence93
