Telcos Urge FG To Boost Local Content With Indigenisation Policy

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has urged the federal government to effectively implement information and communications technology (ICT) with indigenisation policy to boost local content.

Second vice president of ATCON, Mr. Muyiwa Ogungboye, made the call while delivering a paper on “Local Content Development in Nigeria’s ICT Sector: Stimulant for National Economic Recovery” at the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) quarterly forum in Lagos recently. He said that in a bid to reduce and eradicate the continuous unemployment of Nigerian youths both skilled and unskilled, there was an urgent need to reintroduce the indigenisation policy in the form of local contents policy and the government should as a matter of urgency encourage knowledge and the skills transfer.

He noted that since the inauguration of the Office of the Nigerian Content (ONC), there was little or no productive activity to drive the guidelines that were published. He urged the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), and ONC to come up with short and long  term plans that would yield productive activities to drive the ICT ecosystem to know the area where they can invest their ‘investible’ funds.

He also called for establishment of ICT parks which would be saddled with manufacturing of ICT tools. “NCC and ONC should pool resources together for the establishment of ICT Parks. The ICT Park would be given the mandate to encourage the manufacturing of some ICT inputs like microwave radios, switches, routers, mobile phones, Telecom Cables and Connectors.” – Leadership
