Following the launch of Verizon’s 5G FWA launch in four US cities, T-Mobile CEO John Legere has predictably added his two cents.
T-Mobile calls itself the ‘Uncarrier’ for a series of initiatives removing things which consumers dislike about typical carriers. Legere’s outspoken style about his competition matches the brand he represents.
Verizon launched its 5G network in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. The latter city is becoming a showcase for the operator due to its leaders’ willingness to embrace innovation.
Jonathan LeCompte, Pacific Market president for Verizon, said: “We were able to make Sacramento one of our first 5G cities because Mayor Darrell Steinberg and city leaders embraced innovation and developed a strategic vision for how 5G could be a platform for the larger Sacramento technology ecosystem. We believe this vision will pay off big for the city, attracting new investment, businesses and next-generation services for residents.”
Sacramento worked proactively with Verizon for the past year to install small cells on more than 200 utilities poles and street lights.
Maria MacGunigal, the city’s Chief Information Officer, added:“We have shown we can build the infrastructure for companies to come here and deliver new products that will improve the lives of our residents.The arrival of 5G will change the technology landscape in Sacramento forever.”
Users in the four cities where Verizon’s network has launched can only purchase a home broadband package currently. The operator promises ‘First on 5G’ customers will be upgraded without charge to 3GPP 5G NR as equipment becomes available. – Telecoms Tech News
