Surveillance and security for smart cities

Acknowledging the great importance of the ‘Smart Cities Mission’ initiative by the Indian Government, Bharat Exhibitions organized its flagship event on Smart Cities, Safe City & Intelligent Mobility India 2023 Summit on August 23, 2023 at Hotel Shangri-La, New Delhi. The summit brought together industry thought leaders, policymakers, investors and innovators on a single platform. Mr. Shashi Dharan, Managing Director, Bharat Exhibitions rendered the welcome address. Regulatory Frameworks, Data Security and Privacy in Smart Mobility & Safe City was the theme for the Inaugural Session.

Shri B. Shanker Jaiswal, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police was present as the guest of honor during the summit. In his speech he highlighted the concept of intelligent traffic management system and cyber security Vis a Vis smart cities, especially in Delhi. “We are working very hard to ensure cyber security with the help of biometric and cryptographic security”, he was heard quoting. He spoke about the installations of around 25000 CCTV cams in the city of Delhi for ensuring a safe environment. “We ensure that whatever the Delhi police is doing doesn’t go outside, which mainly characterizes the secure aspect of a smart city and e are implementing everything that is required and expected of us from industry perspectives and standards. We have left no stone unturned when it comes to cybersecurity”, he reiterated.

Mr. Sajan S, Vice President of Innovation and Strategy, Norden Communication gave the keynote address during the summit. “As we are moving from smart to safe, the challenges emerge. It’s important to collaborate with ecosystem partners. Surveillance, Security is key issues to be looked into when it comes to smart cities”, he said. Shri Manoj Tandon, Director (Projects, Operation & Maintenance), RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. was the next to speak. He spoke about the affordable, scalable, maintainable solutions in safe city projects, like Wifi, AI, and IoT etc. “We need to have multiple technologies working simultaneously to usher in an era of safe and smart cities effectively”, he was heard quoting in his speech. Dr. Sumit D. Chowdhury, Founder, Chairman & MD, Gaia Smart Cities gave the special address. He highlighted the journey of a smart city since its inception, moving on to awareness, measures, corrections, improvements and finally reaches a stage of being a smart one. “Process, people and technology are key elements and also cities need to be disable friendly”, he reiterated. Safe city has to be a holistic approach, he stressed upon. Mr. Veejay Vaishnv, CEO, Validsoft India,
gave the industry address. “AI is running parallel but with security issues, we need to secure our systems efficiently. Face, thumb, voice are the 3 biometrics available but with voice taking predominance and to tackle security issues”, he said. Shri Subodh Sachan, Director Innovation, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) also gave the special address during the summit. In his speech, he reiterated the need to bring in entrepreneurship into smart city projects. Key part is collaboration with partners and key stakeholders. Mr. Manoj Kumar Singh, Chief Regulatory Officer & CSR, Indus Towers spoke on Cross Sector Digi Infra. “Digitalize then mobilize is the key. Role of infrastructure is very important in any project, especially in smart city projects. Capacity has been replaced by coverage. GOI’s GatiSkakti is gradually making collaboration possible”, he said.

Session 2 began with the Technical Presentations. The theme was : Trends for Digital India: Smarter, Sustainable, Safer Cities. Eminent speakers during the session were Shri Vivek Dua, Chief General Manager (CFA), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Mr. Prashant Oberoi, Director Sales – Govt. Business India & SAARC, Norden Communication, Mr. Amit Mehta, DGM – Government Vertical, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, Mr. Saurabh Agarwal, CEO, TechBridge, Mr. Ravikumar Chinnusamy, Managing Director, Infonet Comm, Mr. Sarvesh Mishra, Business Head, Commrax Networks Pvt Ltd, Mr. Kanishk Gaur, Founder, India Future Foundation.

Session 3 highlighted the Panel Discussion on Safe City and Smart Mobility: The Vision for Future Urban Environments in India, Creating Resilient Cities: Smart Mobility for Disaster Management and Emergency Response. Mr. Dinesh Chand Sharma, Director – Standards & Public Policy, SESEI moderated during the session with eminent speakers from all verticals like Mr. Parikshit Tiwari, Associate Director – Sales, Norden Communication, Mr. Vishvatosh Pandey, Regional Pre-Sales Manager (North & East), Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, Mr. A.S. Pandey, AGM (IT) & CISO, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd., Mr. Divyanshu Verma, CEO & Co-Founder, Redinent, Mr. N. Kishor Narang, Principal Design Strategist & Architect, Narnix Technolabs expressing their views and valuable insights.
