STC, MediaTek and Ericsson demonstrate first 5G NR carrier aggregation with ESS using dimensity 1000+

Saudi Telecom Company collaborated with MediaTek and Ericsson to demonstrate the first ever real-world viability of 5G Carrier Aggregation using Ericsson Spectrum Sharing (ESS) in live network conditions. The test, conducted in Riyadh, established the 5G Non-standalone (NSA) data call by aggregating 20MHz on low-band (700MHz) FDD spectrum (shared with LTE using ESS) and 100MHz on mid-band (3.6GHz) TDD spectrum in live network conditions, using a smartphone powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ 5G-integrated chip. Additionally, NSA Dual Connectivity was enabled in order to aggregate two more LTE carriers using 40MHz total bandwidth.

In this trial, several achievements were observed by validating the gains of NR CA compared to a single NR carrier in terms of coverage extension provided by a blanket FDD carrier, and data throughput enhancements provided by higher bandwidth on TDD carrier, in different radio conditions and in live network coverage and user traffic. The companies are continuing their collaborations towards a commercial readiness of the NR CA.

5G NR with Carrier Aggregation combined with Ericsson Spectrum Sharing (ESS) enables more efficient spectrum usage for carriers, extends 5G coverage, and also provides greater throughput to each connected device. Notably, these cellular innovations can benefit all 5G users and grow the real ‘5G experience’. Smartphones powered by MediaTek Dimensity 5G-integrated chips already benefit from 5G-CA and DSS/ESS support, enabling them to take advantage of new carrier technology deployments, such as this, as they are applied throughout global markets.
