Servers with non-Intel CPUs to enjoy rising shipment shares over next two years

The shipment share of AMD-powered servers is estimated to rise in 2023 and 2024, while that of Arm-powered serves will triple the 2020 percentage in 2024, according to the latest figures from DIGITIMES Research.

AMD-powered servers will account for almost 18% of the overall server shipments in 2024, up from 2020’s 10.1% and 2023’s 16.3% thanks to AMD platforms’ successful penetration into the cloud datacenter industry and HPC server market.

Since cloud datacenter operators’ computing services rely heavily on systems’ virtual CPUs (vCPUs). AMD’s processors, thanks to the high number of cores, can provide more vCPU-oriented services compared to competitors’ same-level processors, making AMD’s platform more attractive to the operators.

Sources from the upstream supply chain also expect datacenter operators such as Microsoft and Google to expand their adoption of AMD CPU-based products in the next few years. AMD’s plan to acquire Xilinx will also benefit the CPU maker in integrating CPU and FPGA for edge server applications.

Servers powered by Arm-based CPUs are expected to enjoy a shipment share of close to 10% in 2024, up dramatically from 2020’s 3% with Amazon and Nvidia being the main promoters of the servers.

Amazon is the keenest datacenter operator in deploying Arm-based servers. In addition to EC2 public cloud services, Amazon has also launched Arm-based Outposts hybrid cloud system for edge server applications to expand its enterprise cloud services business.

With the ongoing trade tensions between the US and China, Arm-based servers will also enjoy expansion in China. Alibaba unveiled its in-house developed Arm-based server CPU Yitian 710 in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will implement the CPU into the infrastructure of its Alibaba Cloud platform

Nvidia is set to release Arm-based Grace series server CPUs that are integrated with GPU and DPU to target the cloud HPC and AI server market. The product line is expected to significantly boost Arm-based server CPUs’ shipment share after 2024. Digitimes
