Samsung Brings Improvements To The Flawed Galaxy Fold

South Korean electronics giant Samsung found itself in an embarrassing spot when it had to cancel the shipments of its hottest smartphone of the year, the Galaxy Fold. According to a report by Forbes in April, Samsung had announced that it would automatically start cancelling orders for the Galaxy Fold that faced problems with its display. At that point, Samsung did mention what the issue was but didn’t say anything about how it would be addressing them.

The defect

In a statement to the US media, Samsung said their initial findings showed that the reported issues could be due to the impact on the exposed areas at the top and bottom of the hinge, besides a broken substance inside the device.

Several publications, including Bloomberg News, outlined a bevvy of problems with test versions of the device, which folds inward like a notebook. Bloomberg’s review unit experienced issues after a plastic protective layer was removed on Monday. By Tuesday night, a small tear had developed at the top of the hinge, where the gadget opens. Then the display failed to operate properly. This was an issue several other reviewers faced.

The solution

A South Korean publication Yonhap News reports that Samsung will tuck the protective display layer into the body. This will (hopefully) prevent users from peeling it off under the mistaken belief that it’s an everyday screen protector. Samsung will also block the gaps at the top and bottom of the hinge to prevent debris from wrecking the foldable display.

Yonhap News also said the device is expected to arrive in June, however, nothing is certain as of now. It also added that Samsung is supposedly testing the Fold on Korean networks, and the results would affect the timeliness of the release.―Livemint
