Reliance Jio’s Holi Ad May Be A Dig At Airtel And Vodafone

Reliance Jio’s Holi ad seems to be taking a dig at rivals Airtel and Vodafone Idea. “Life is not Red. Life is Colourful. Life is Beautiful. Happy Holi From Jio,” say the video shared by Reliance Jio on Twitter. While arch-rival Airtel’s logo is Red, Vodafone-Idea offers moved all its users under Vodafone Red. Last month, Vodafone announced that all its postpaid products and services will be exclusively offered to customers under the Vodafone Red plan.

So, the ‘Red jibe’ seems to be targeting Airtel’s and Vodafone’s customers to hop on to Reliance Jio’s network for a more ‘colourful and beautiful life’.

In another news, Reliance Jio has reportedly proposed to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) that wireless data prices are gradually increased to Rs 20 per GB from the current Rs 15 per GB, after six to nine months. The company is said to have made the suggestion on a consultation paper of TRAI on “Tariff issues in telecom services”.

While advocating for TRAI’s intervention to prescribe floor price for wireless data service, Jio said voice tariffs should continue under forbearance as before as the same will affect the masses and will be difficult to implement. According to a news agency report, Jio said that the typical Indian consumer is very price sensitive and target floor price should be implemented in 2-3 tranches so as to minimise the impact of increase in tariff.

Incidentally, Reliance Jio recorded a sharp fall in mobile phone user additions in December 2019, as per TRAI data. Analysts see this as a result of the company’s twin decisions to recover interconnect usage charges (IUC) for voice calls to rival networks and tariff hike that rolled out in December.

Mukesh Ambani-led Jio added a modest 82,308 mobile users, taking its subscriber base past 370 million in December. This is way below the 9.1 million and 5.6 million customers it added in the months of October and November respectively last year.

In December 2019, all three telecom operators — Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio — increased bundled prepaid tariffs for the first time in three years. The tariff hike ranges between 14-33%.
