Reliance Jio partners with Qualcomm to develop CPEs and mmWave radios

Reliance Jio, one of India’s leading telecom operators, is partnering with American chipmaker Qualcomm Technologies to develop its own consumer premises equipment (CPE), millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio products, and Wi-Fi 6 technology. Shyam Mardikar, President and Group CTO Mobility at Reliance Jio, announced this collaboration during an industry conference organizedQualcomm.

Mardikar highlighted the potential of 5G technology to enhance connectivity and create new opportunities in education, collaboration, and entertainment. He emphasized that digital living has become the backbone of last-mile connectivity, and 5G will play a crucial role in enabling this digital transformation.

Mardikar also discussed the evolution of wireless mobile networks in India. With 4G, the focus was on connectivity and providing compute, storage, and intelligence close to data centers. However, with 5G, the convergence of higher spectrum, hyperconnectivity, and increased compute and storage capacity will create a new last mile for communication.

He further emphasized the programmability of networks, data analytics, edge and distributed computing, and security as key elements of the latest mobile networks. These capabilities will enable intelligent decision-making and enhance the overall performance of 5G networks.

Reliance Jio and Qualcomm had previously announced their collaboration on cloud-native 5G infrastructure development. The partnership aims to build an ecosystem that can serve India and beyond in the mmWave and sub-6GHz frequency bands. Additionally, Qualcomm is working with Jio to deploy 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in India.

The telecom market in India is witnessing the launch of 5G FWA servicesleading operators like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Reliance Jio has already introduced its commercial 5G fixed broadband service, JioAirFiber, in Delhi and other metro cities.

Overall, Reliance Jio’s collaboration with Qualcomm highlights its commitment to advancing India’s telecom infrastructure and providing innovative solutions for enhanced connectivity and digital experiences. OPPToday
