Reliance Jio reportedly starts trials of its homegrown 5G to improve virtual reality
Reliance Jio has reported undertaken a trial of its immersive high-definition virtual reality (VR) meeting using its indigenously developed 5G NR radio and 5G core network (5GCN). Both the enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and 5G’s low-latency capabilities were leveraged during the trial.
Reliance Jio stated that the high speed and low latency characteristics of 5G technology allow the augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), smart factories, Industry 4.0, 5G smart cities, improved surveillance, etc.
“By using Jio’s indigenous 5G NR radio and 5GCN, we have trialled an immersive high definition VR experience. This trial leveraged both eMBB and low latency capabilities of 5G to deliver the end-user experience. It is truly exciting to experience the possibilities that come to life using 5G and the potential transformation that is possible!”
further on the company also demonstrated HD multi-party VR video calling with participants physically wearing the VR headsets while others joined from the cloud also demonstrated collaborative screen sharing and presentations across VR participants, and also whiteboarding/sketching using VR control and live sharing.
This VR trial has changed the perspective of the virtual conference room in real-time while bringing VR features like hand controls and feedback, and VR meeting live recording and uploading to the cloud for future reference.
According to Jio, the homegrown 5G stack which it has successfully can also be exported to foreign markets once the competence is proved at a pan-India scale. The telecom has already started its 5G trials in Navi Mumbai and recently achieved end-to-end network slicing on its indigenous 5G standalone core.
On the other hand, Jio’s biggest rival, Airtel had recently conducted the first cloud gaming session in a 5G environment, which was a part of its 5G trials in Gurgaon’s Manesar.
Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last week said the government may auction the 5G spectrum in February 2022, and may also try for a January 2022 timeline. Tech2Sports
