Realme To Set Up Exclusive R&D Facility In India

Realme, a standalone smartphone brand from the stable of Chinese phone maker Oppo, will set up an exclusive research and development centre in India.

The brand, which was first launched here before making its appearance in China, has a few researchers working for it at the parent company’s R&D facility here.

“Realme has a global R&D centre in China with 300 employees. But we will soon come out with an exclusive R&D centre to improve on the product based on local needs,” Madhav Sheth, Chief Executive Officer of Realme India, said.

The one-year-old brand sold seven million phones in the first 12 months ended May.

“We have shipped 8 million phones in the first year and there are 7 million active users. We have achieved a marketshare of 7 per cent in the first quarter this year,” he said.

“We are targeting a marketshare of 10-15 percent in the 150-million piece’s market in the country this year,” he said.

He sees no challenge with regard to production as the parent firm’s facility at Noida can churn out 60-80 million pieces, annually.

He was here in connection with the launch of C2 model.

Oppo’s new brand, which targets the tech-savvy, is also focussing on the offline sales apart from the online presence with which it started its journey.

“Our products are available in 8,000 outlets across the country. The new model is available for sale from June 15, 2019,” he said.―The Hindu Business Line
