Prices of 5G phones falling fast in China market

op-tier vendors Huawei and Xiaomi have been keen on rolling out low-priced entry-level 5G phones to grab larger market shares, pushing other major and second-tier brands to also engage in price-cutting competition, said the sources.

The ongoing price cuts for 5G phones in the China market come almost two quarters earlier than originally expected, leaving major international brands with limited time to adjust their cost structures in order to compete effectively with their counterparts in China, said the sources.

Competition in the 5G phone segment is expected to become keener in second-half 2020 as major players in the Android camp, which also include Oppo, Vivo, Samsung and Google, as well as Apple, are set to release new 5G models, added the sources.

With global economic activities remaining weak, the ability of individual handset vendors to come out with models with high price/performance ratios will be crucial to winning market share in the second half, commented the sources.
