PCD shipments to continue reducing to pre-pandemic levels, IDC

The Middle East and Africa (MEA) personal computing devices (PCD) market, which is made up of desktops, notebooks, workstations, and tablets, is expected to decline 18.9% year on year in the first quarter of 2023, according to industry analysis conducted by International Data Corporation (IDC). The global technology research and consulting firm’s latest Worldwid e Quarterly PCD Tracker indicates that a total of 4.8 million units will be shipped across the region in Q1 2023. For the year 2023 overall, IDC expects shipments to decline 10.9% year on year, with a total of 7.6 million units shipped across the 12-month period.

“Looking at 2023 overall, the biggest decline by far is expected to be seen in Egypt, where a massive education deal that was delivered in 2022 is not expected to repeated at the same scale,” says Fouad Charakla, IDC’s senior research manager for client devices in the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa. “With a general slowdown in demand anticipated, PCD shipments into most countries across the region will experience year-on-year declines, including the major markets of South Africa, the UAE, Israel, and Turkey.

“Some countries in the region, such as Egypt, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Turkey, have recently experienced devaluations of their local currencies against the U.S. dollar. This has raised the costs of imports, including those of personal computing devices, and will negatively impact demand in the aforementioned countries. Despite these challenges, some massive education deals are expected to be delivered in both Pakistan and Egypt this year, while a large government deal is expected to be delivered in Nigeria.”
