Parallel Wireless partners with Vodafone Ireland to deliver its Open RAN vision

Parallel Wireless, Inc., the US-based Open RAN company offering 2G 4G 4G 5G O-RAN 2G solution for rural connectivity and announced that Vodafone Ireland, the nation’s network provider, to deploy Open RAN sites throughout the Northwest region using Parallel Wireless O-RAN software to deliver a new 4G service to 30 locations in a faster and more profitable way.

Amid the growing demand for mobile broadband services, mobile operators are facing CAPEX and OPEX implementation challenges by offering new coverage or capacity to their end users.

Open RAN is an industry approach to defining and building 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G RAN solutions based on a general purpose hardware and software defined technology with open interfaces between components. Open RAN enables mobile operators to mix and match radio, software, and server providers, offering provider diversity, flexibility in deployments, and reduced TCO. Open RAN CAPEX is projected to reach more than $ 40 billion (€33.70 billion) and represent total RAN spending of more than 50% by 2026.

Vodafone has been a proponent of Open RAN driving industry innovation to reduce implementation costs and avoid vendor lock-in, recently requiring its vendors to support O-RAN split 7.2 option to ensure interoperability. Vodafone has had ongoing TIP Open RAN trials in DRC and Turkey with Parallel Wireless . Parallel Wireless’ ALL G cloud native ORAN solution has demonstrated very strong performance, quality of service and cost benefits for the operator.

In Ireland, sites are being built on an O-RAN architecture with a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) provided by Comba Telecom, Parallel Wireless Distributed Unit (DU), and Central Unit (CU) software running on a vBBU (virtual baseband unit) provided by Supermicro and deployed on site. The DU / CU software connects to the Parallel Wireless Near Real-Time Intelligent Controller (RIC) located in a Dublin data centre on HP hardware using the virtualised environment VMWare ESXi v6.7.

The announcement follows the Vodafone Group’s commitment to use Open RAN technology for at least 2,600 sites in the UK. It is the largest commitment to Open RAN made by any European carrier. Open RAN promises to help build and expand wireless networks in the regions that Vodafone serves, and to provide next-generation digital services to end users, communities and businesses.
