Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Camera Maker Accuses Apple Of Stealing Dual Camera Tech In iPhones

Many smartphone users may not have heard about an Israel-based company called Corephotonics. This firm made some headlines back in 2017 for suing the tech giant Apple. As per the firm, Apple infringed on their dual camera and zoom patents by implementing it in the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus. It even claimed that Apple negotiators even mocked the firm for their patents. Now, Corephotonics, which is responsible for manufacturing the camera tech used in Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, has filed a new suit claiming the iPhone maker infringed 10 patents. This applies to all the iPhones with dual rear cameras that are released after the iPhone 7 Plus. This means the list includes the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

As reported by iDrop News website, the filing was done with the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Like the last time, the new suit claims that Apple executives met the company for a potential license agreement for the dual camera tech but then stole the tech to work on a similar version and use it in iPhone 7 Plus. Corephotonics adds that their patents were filed with USPTO between November 2013 and June 2016 and included camera tech related to optical zoom, telephoto lens and the software to combine images taken by dual rear cameras.

“Apple has infringed and continues to infringe one or more claims of each of the ’233 patent, the ’898 patent, the ’840 patent, the ’647 patent, the ’277 patent, the ’897 patent, the ’479 patent, the ’408 patent, the ’332 patent, and the ’942 patent (collectively the “Asserted Patents”), at least by importing, using, selling, and/or offering to sell the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone Xs, and/or iPhone Xs Max (the “Accused Products”), as set forth in detail below. Corephotonics seeks, among other things, monetary damages and injunctive relief,” states the official complaint.

It is yet to be revealed if the upcoming iPhones, which are expected to launch on September 10 this year, are ‘using’ one of Corephotonics’ tech or not. This year two iPhones are expected to feature three rear cameras, with the third one being a wide-angle camera.―Times Of India
