Nokia mobile increases feature phone share in India in Q1 2020

Counterpoint Research revealed market data about the performance of the smartphone market in India during the first quarter in 2020. The main topic of any report nowadays is COVID-19 and how the pandemic is affecting the business and the people.

In India, the smartphone market posted a growth year-over-year of 4% in Q1 2020 (January till end of March) compared to the same period last year. That is because the decline started in March, when the government ordered a lockdown. During March, the shipment declined 19%, but good results for January and February kept the total shipments positive.

Xiaomi had a 30% smartphone market share in Q1 2020, followed by Vivo with 17%, Samsung with 16%, Realme with 14% and Oppo with 12%. Samsung lost 8% market share compared to Q1 2019, while top BBK brands Vivo, Realme and Oppo increased their combined market share from 26% in Q1 2019 to impressive 43% last quarter. Nokia Mobile isn’t in the top 5 smartphone vendors.

In regards to feature phones, the market saw a 24% decline compared to Q1 2019, as smartphones become more and more affordable. ITel was the largest feature phone vendor with 22% in Q1 2020, compared to 7% they had last year. Number 2 was Lava that grew their market share from 13% last year to 15% in the first quarter this year, while the third place belonged to Samsung with 15%, same as in the same period last year. Nokia Mobile grew their marketshare from 8% to 13%, which was enough to remain at spot 4.
