Nokia Mobile Improves Feature Phone Share In India In Q3 2019

Counterpoint Research released their quarterly report about the mobile market in India. Indian smartphone market continued its growth and reach a record of 49 million units shipped last quarter.

In Q3 2019, Xiaomi remained the biggest individual smartphone brand with 26% market share (1% YoY decline), followed by Samsung with 20% market share (3% YoY decline) and Vivo with 17% market share (7% YoY growth). The biggest story is Realme that went from 3% market share in Q3 2018 to 16% in Q3 2019, thus becoming the 4th biggest brand in India. To me, the biggest news is that the BBK group brands, Oppo, Vivo and Realme reached a combined market share of 41% and I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.

In feature phones, the Nokia brand improved its market position going from 8% market share in Q3 2019 to 12% market share in Q3 2019. The feature phone market had a 37% year-on-year decline in shipments, indicating that the growth of feature phone shipments caused by Jio and Nokia’s re-entering might be coming to an end. Nokia brand was No. 4 in feature phone shipments, behind Samsung at No. 1 (22%), ITel at No. 2 (16%) and Lava at No. 3 (16%).
