Nokia Hopes To Overtake Huawei In Brazil’s 5G Auction

Nokia, expects Brazil to become the world’s largest venue for 5G spectrum applications when it hits the market in 2020. In a recent interview, Wilson Cardoso, Nokia’s chief technology officer (Latin America), said that the company is firmly committed to the 5G deployment in Brazil. He believes that the country is becoming its largest market in Latin America.

According to Cardoso, there is a political will to conduct large-scale spectrum auctions in the first quarter of 2020. This is because the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (Anatel) has determined the rules of the process. In May of this year, Anatel allocated 2.3GHz and 3.5GHz frequencies for 5G. In addition, 26GHz and 700MHz will support ultra-reliable and low-latency communications for industrial use.

Cardoso further said that the Brazilian frequency auction could be the world’s largest 5G auction to date. That is if the agency decides to sell all four (band spectrum) in the same auction on March 2020. He considers the 26GHz and 700MHz frequencies as “crown” gem”.

Nokia began testing 5G with Brazilian carrier, TIM Participacoes, in February 2018. However, the company is still working with other operators. Its rivals, Ericsson and Huawei, are also working with Anatel for the auction. According to Cardoso, Nokia is taking advantage of opportunities given the “suspecting issues” with Chinese suppliers. “We are a Western alternative to Huawei products and their direct competing products. This is because our end-to-end product portfolio is very compatible,”—Gizchina
