State-owned telecom firm BSNL has not approved any proposal to lay off 54,000 employees, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Thursday. BSNL and MTNL have sought permission from the government to monetise their land assets as well as for a voluntary retirement scheme for employees on the Gujarat model.

Under the Gujarat model, an amount equivalent to 35 days of salary for each completed year of service, and 25 days of salary for each year of service left till retirement is offered.

In a reply to a separate question, Prasad said BSNL employees’ salary in 2018-19 amounted to around 75 per cent of the company’s total revenue while the same in case of private telecom companies varied between 2.9-5 per cent.

The revenue of BSNL is pegged at around Rs 19,308 crore while expenditure on employees’ remuneration stood at Rs 14,488 crore.

Still BSNL has the lowest debt in the telecom sector which is reeling under total debt burden of around Rs 4.33 lakh crore as per industry analysts.

“BSNL has informed that as on March 31, 2019, it has a debt of Rs 16,788 crore, which is the lowest among the major telecom operators,” Prasad said.―Times of India
