Mobile Number Portability Requests In India Increased To 3.25 Million In November 2018

Porting requests were submitted for 3.25 million connections in the month of November 2018, according to the data released by the Indian Telecom regulator TRAI. This is up 2 percent from 3.19 million porting requests reported in October 2018.

For November, the maximum number of requests in Zone-I (North and West India) were received from Maharashtra at 0.36 million, followed by Delhi at 0.21 million, and Gujarat at 0.19 million. On the flip side, the least number of requests were received from Jammu & Kashmir, which has one of the lowest user bases among all states in the country, and Haryana, at only 20,000 requests. Note that TRAI does not provide any operator-wise breakdown for these mobile number porting requests.

In Zone-II (South and East India), the maximum number of requests were received from Tamil Nadu, with 0.35 million porting requests, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 0.33 million requests, while the number of requests received from Karnataka stood at 0.23 million. The North East circle saw no change in the number of porting requests for the month, at 10,000.

Note that in November 2017, the TRAI reduced the per port transaction charge for each successful Mobile Number Portability from Rs 19 to Rs 4. TRAI had capped the porting charge at Rs 19 in 2009, and operators were free to charge any amount less than this if they chose to.―MediaNama
