Maharashtra emerges as one of Foxconn’s India investment choices

Since Foxconn joined India’s Vedanta to set up a fab in India, the factory’s potential locations have attracted much attention. Maharashtra and Telangana may be among Foxconn’s preferred locations.

A Foxconn delgation, led by chairman Young Liu, visited India over the weekend and met with India’s prime minister Narendra Modi and Vedanta. According to Business Line, Liu also visited Telangana, where the state’s IT minister KT Rama Rao assured Foxconn of the best support if Foxconn decided to invest.

Furthermore, Mint reported that Foxconn visited Maharashtra, meeting top officials of the state. The report said that Foxconn plans investment in semiconductor and consumer electronics in the state, and the state encouraged Foxconn to join a league of global OEMs and world-class electronics suppliers there. However, Foxconn did not confirm the investment plan in the report.

Since India announced the list of applicants for the semiconductor and display fabs incentive schemes in February, the state governments in India have been wooing investments to build India’s first semiconductor cluster. Despite ISMC’s US$3 billion investment in Karnataka, the JV between Vedanta and Foxconn has yet to decide their fab location.

In 2015, Foxconn planned to set up 10 to 12 plants in India by 2020, including a US$5 billion investment plan in Maharashtra, but the plan did not materialize.

Currently, Foxconn’s India plants are in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, several electronics manufacturers, such as LG Electronics and Jabil, have set up factories in Maharashtra. DigiTimes
