Koo denies data leak, says voluntarily shown and cannot be termed a data leak

Indian microblogging platform Koo, which is currently doing rounds on the internet for leaking its users’ data, has issued an official statement and clarified that the data visible is voluntarily shown by the users and cannot be termed a data leak. This is in context with the screenshots shared by ethical hacker Elliot Alderson who recently claimed that the Koo app is leaking its users’ personal information such as the date of birth, marital status, e-mail ID, name and gender.

Koo app Founder Aprameya Radhakrishna took to Twitter to clear the air amidst Koo’s data leak controversy. He said, “The data visible is something that the user has voluntarily shown on their profile of Koo. It cannot be termed a data leak. If you visit a user profile you can see it anyway.”

He further noted, “95% of Koo users log in through their mobile phone number. Language communities of India do not use email to log in and hence was not the priority of the company. Email login was introduced recently. Now that concerns have been raised it has already been blocked from view.”

Koo is a made in India app that’s being seen as Twitter’s alternative. It is founded by Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatk and available to download on both Android and iOS devices. The app has seen phenomenal growth in the past few weeks. It has already garnered 1 million users on the Google Play Store and reached fourth place on the App Store. Times Now News
