Intel to layoff 340 employees at California campus

Intel Corporation has told state and local officials that it plans to lay off about 340 workers at its Folsom campus.

The news came in WARN Act notices to the state’s Employment Development Department, Folsom’s mayor and other officials. The WARN Act requires employers to provide 60-day notice to workers and state officials of mass layoffs.

“These are difficult decisions, and we are committed to treating impacted employees with dignity and respect,” Intel said in a statement to KCRA 3.

The company cited a “challenging macro-economic environment” and that it is “focused on identifying cost reductions and efficiency gains through multiple initiatives, including some business and function-specific workforce reductions in areas across the company.”

The company first sent a WARN Act notice on Dec. 2 that it planned to lay off about 111 workers at its 1900 Prairie City Drive facility starting on Jan. 31. On Jan. 11, the company said in an update it had raised that number to 176 but that some workers may find other roles at Intel. All workers had received 60 days’ notice, Intel said.

On Jan. 13, Intel announced another round of layoffs that affect 167 workers and that those are “expected to be permanent.”

“All impacted employees are being notified of separation with at least 60 days notice, with the first separations presently scheduled to occur during a 14-day period commencing on March 15, 2023,” the notice said. “Additional separations are expected after the 30-day period beginning March 15, 2023.”

Intel, which has more than 13,000 workers across California, says its Folsom campus is one of the company’s biggest sites. It’s also one of the largest private-sector employers in the area.

The Folsom campus comprises seven buildings with 1.5 million square feet of office and lab space.

As of Monday, Intel’s site still had 60 job listings available.

Intel becomes the latest tech company to announce mass layoffs. In recent weeks, about 40,000 workers have been laid off from Amazon, Microsoft and Google, according to Insider. Facebook’s parent company Meta and Twitter cut thousands of workers in November. SFGate
