Intel Reportedly Denies Delaying Apple’s 5G iPhones

Recently it was reported that Apple has apparently lost confidence in Intel for its timely launch of 5G modem chips for future iPhones. The Cupertino-based tech firm was also speculated to be considering working on its own 5G chips. But Intel has reportedly cleared the air and has reconfirmed that the arrival schedule of 5G chips has not been changed, according to a statement provided to The Fast Company website.

Intel, as mentioned in November last year, re-confirmed the claim stating that “As we said in November 2018, Intel plans to support customer device launches in 2020 with its XMM 8160 5G multimode modem.” If everything goes according to the plan, Apple might be able to launch 5G iPhones in 2020. The chip-maker is said to deliver samples to Apple this summer.

Apple making it own 5G modem chips?

The report adds that Apple could also be working on its own 5G modem chips this time. The company is speculated to have somewhere around 1,000 to 2,000 engineers working on modems for iPhones. Some engineers from Qualcomm and Intel are said to have joined the team as well. Either Apple could make its own chip from head to toe or could just design it and give it to TSMC or Samsung to fabricate it.

A separate report mentioned that Samsung has not shown any interest in providing Apple with 5G modem chips for iPhones when approached. The rival company is likely saving it for the Galaxy S10 5G variant, which has just launched in Korea, and for the upcoming Galaxy Note phablet. Apple also has Huawei as one of the options but Huawei and the US government don’t have a good history. Needless to say, the iPhone maker will have a hard time going back to Qualcomm for 5G modems given that the duo has been in a long patent battle.―Times of India
