5G spectrum is the latest upgrade in the long-term evolution (LTE) of mobile broadband
networks. This 5G network will operate in the millimeter-wave spectrum (30-300 GHz) which
can send large amounts of data at very high speeds as the frequency is very high, and it
experiences little interference from surrounding signals. In the high-band spectrum of 5G,
internet speeds have been tested to be as high as 20 Gbps (gigabits per second), i.e., Ten times
faster than that of 4G services.

Faqs:
1) Why is the 5G spectrum as an indigenous invention necessary?

solution to full capabilities to test products and applications such as autonomous
vehicles, smart sensors, and remote robotics. the 5G testbed can help the industry
reduce its dependence on foreign facilities in the absence of IT startups.
2) How much did the center allocate BSNL for tech up-gradation?

What is the ongoing tiff between TCS and BSNL?

The deadlock between state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Tata
Consultancy Services (TCS) continued as the latter sought a price hike to supply gears for 6,000
sites for the roll-out of telco’s much-awaited 4G services. However, this will be launched by
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2022. TCS is often in telecom news, for its demands
to enhance the network equipment supply cost in line with the increase in component pricing
due to supply chain constraints, escalated labor wages, and continued rupee volatility against
the US Dollar.

This price offered (Rs.560 Crores) is 56% lesser than the price point offered to Finnish
multinational Nokia for the Expansion of phase VIII in 2018. This discourages many home-grown
vendors and companies who have invested in r&d activities. But are instead offered such
inviable price points that led to the cancellation of as many as 20 tenders in the last 3 years.
However, some might say otherwise too and state that it might be a challenge for a PSU to meet
the demands similarly in the long run for maintaining network quality with its sole
supplier TCS. To know more facts and detailed particulars of the latest telecom industry news

What are the major challenges for 5G spectrum installation?

The main challenge for India being left behind in the race for the 5G spectrum is, that the
demands of digitalization have to be met, but there are still some market dynamics that can hinder
the advent of new technologies in telecom industries in India.
The goal set for the fiberization of mobile towers by the end of the 2023-24 financial year is said to
be 70 % more than the current situation. This is necessary to roll out 5G in an efficient manner
and will also boost 4G services simultaneously. But there are several challenges to achieving this
noting the current fibrilization update of 34% only. Considering the financial stress of the operators
and their inability to raise tariffs to more profitable levels due to fierce competition, keeping a
high base price will adversely impact participation even though the base price has been reduced
in the bidding. Telecom giants Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio will benefit heftily
from the Centre’s no-spectrum usage charges on the upcoming 5G auction.
