India opens up a huge opportunity for chipset vendors

“Last two weeks have been game changer for the progress in Open RAN. 5G auctions just concluded in India. India is biggest volume market outside of China. With “Made In India” initiatives from the Indian Government, there will be new entrants in the market. Open RAN architecture provides opportunity for new players to enter the market.

It is an opportunity for key US chipset vendors Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, Marvel, Nvidia and Cloud vendors IBM, Red Hat, Google, Microsoft, AWS to have access to large volume business. Each of these companies spend a lot more money on R&D than Ericsson and Nokia combined. They have much greater capability to design energy efficient and more integrated chipsets than any of the existing telco vendors. Open RAN provides access to the market that is currently closed for them. With encouragement from Indian operators, Indian Government, Quad Countries including US, Canada, Japan, Australia, India, opportunities will increase,” says Pardeep Kohli, President, Chief Executive Officer, Mavenir.
