India Has Lifted Its Ban On TikTok — But The App Lost At Least 2 Million Users

India has lifted its ban on TikTok, the popular mobile app for creating and sharing short videos, according to a report in Bar and Bench.

According to Reuters, the ban led to the app’s Chinese publisher, ByteDance, to experience losses of up to $500,000 a day and has put more than 250 jobs in jeopardy.

In a statement published in The Verge, the company said: “We are glad about this decision and we believe it is also greatly welcomed by our thriving community in India, who use TikTok as a platform to showcase their creativity. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our users better.”

“While we’re pleased that our efforts to fight against misuse of the platform has been recognized, the work is never ‘done’ on our end,” the statement continued. “We are committed to continuously enhancing our safety features as a testament to our ongoing commitment to our users in India.”

The Madras High Court lifted the ban on future downloads of TikTok and the app will, once again, be able to broadcast videos recorded by users using the app.

According to Gulf News, the company claimed that in the two days TikTok was unavailable on Google and Apple’s app stores, it had been unable to complete six million download requests and missed out on nearly two million users.―Business Insider
