IIT-BHU develops LoRaWAN-enabled device, traditional meters to smart meters

The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, has pioneered a groundbreaking solution to modernize traditional meters by developing a low-cost LoRaWAN-enabled device that converts them into smart meters. This innovative approach eliminates the need for costly replacements, making smart meter technology more accessible.

Led by Hari Prabhat Gupta, the research team at IIT (BHU) designed a LoRaWAN-enabled device that enables smart meter functionality without relying on internet connectivity.

This advancement is particularly beneficial in areas with limited or no internet access. The device collects meter readings automatically, ensuring efficient and accurate data without manual intervention. Gupta’s team focused on three primary areas: device design, deployment, and the development of compatible software for common smartphones. The result is a versatile and affordable LoRaWAN-enabled device that not only facilitates meter reading but also raises user awareness about power consumption. Additionally, the device has potential applications in areas such as signboard reading and assisting the disabled, highlighting its multifunctional capabilities. Gupta said that the initiative is set to reduce wastage and avoid unnecessary replacement of existing meters, promoting sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

The research work is partially funded by IDAPT-Hub IIT (BHU), Varanasi, and SERB. Looking ahead, IIT (BHU) aims to integrate this technology into a broader smart building framework. The next milestone involves converting existing electric, water, and gas meters to a LoRaWAN-enabled system. This advancement will facilitate automatic meter readings, monitor available parking spaces, manage cleaning and waste disposal, and automate garden watering systems. ToI
