Hyderabad gets a lead start on 5G deployment

Hyderabad is one of the 13 cities that will soon have 5G (fifth generation) connectivity. According to experts, the city’s telecom tower coverage and optic fiber connectivity may have made it a perfect choice for the initial phase of launch. According to officials, the city has one of the best telecom tower coverages in the country, outperforming the national average.

The fiberisation of base transceiver stations (BTSs) is also accelerating in the country. India plans to connect up to eight lakh new mobile towers through optical fiber over the next two years to more than double its existing capacity.

These two components are required for the deployment of 5G services. According to officials, Telangana is in a stronger position because it has the most towers in the country.
By the end of September, the state’s telecom tower count had risen from 25,097 in 2021 to 28,078. In 2020, the total number of telecom towers was 22,245.

Fiber is critical to 5G operators for backhauling their networks. The backhaul serves as the network’s backbone, connecting it to other networks and sub-networks. Backhaul also makes sure data or network transfer between public access points.

With 7,93,551 units connected by optical fiber in India, telecom service providers will fiberize their BT stations located on mobile towers. Almost 86,000 towers have now been fiberised, the vast bulk of which are in Hyderabad, Telangana.

Fibered BTS has a national average of 34%. Only a few states have more than 36% of such towers, notably Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

The Telangana optic cable project (Tiber) is also rapidly increasing. According to sources, in addition to its own aim of delivering commercial broadband services, TFiber will help with fiber’s ROLLOUT JOURNEY TO BEGIN SOONing the towers.

Because data travels in the form of light in fiber-optic cables, there is extremely little signal loss during transmission, allowing data to move faster and over longer distances. The process, which is difficult and time-consuming, is the principal hindrance to tower and fiber installation.

Telangana is the first state to adopt a policy on tower clearances as part of the ease of doing business, and the high cellular density in Hyderabad likely puts it higher on the list of first-phase 5G rollouts, according to a key official close to T-Fiber. Elets CIO
