Huawei has been launching its flagship P-series phones in India, but the company is yet to bring its Mate line-up of flagship phones to the country. Things may change this year though as Huawei may launch the upcoming Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro in India soon. The company, on Friday, announced that its newly announced Kirin 980 processor will be available by Q4, 2018 in India on Huawei devices. Huawei will launch the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro for global markets on October 16 and unless it launches another product based on the Kirin 980, chances are the company’s Mate 20 phones may come to India by the end of this year. This will make the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro the first Mate-series phones to launch in India.

“The world’s most powerful and intelligent, AI chipset (aka Kirin 980) to be commercially available by Q4 in India on Huawei devices,” the company said in a press statement. “The performance heavy chipset will provide a level of gaming, photography and videography to consumers never experienced before in the industry,” it added.

Huawei announced its next-generation high-end Kirin 980 processor at IFA 2018. At the same time, the company also announced that the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be the first Huawei phones to pack the new processor and that it will launch the phones on October 16 at an event in London.

Not only is the Kirin 980 the world’s first commercially available 7nm chipset it also packs an all-new Kirin CPU subsystem with Flex-Scheduling technology, an all-new Mali-G76 GPU, a fourth-generation ISP and lots of new AI smarts courtesy an all-new Dual NPU. It is claimed to deliver 20 per cent improved performance and 40 per cent improved efficiency over its predecessor, the Kirin 970.

The Kirin 980 is also notably the world’s first processor built around ARM’s Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU. It has an octa-core tri-cluster configuration consisting of two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores, two high-efficiency Cortex-A76 cores, and two extreme efficiency Cortex-A55 cores. In tandem with Huawei’s Flex-Scheduling technology the Kirin 980 SoC can automatically “designate the high-performance cores to handle immediate, intensive workloads, the high-efficiency cores to provide sustained performance, and ultra-efficiency cores to tackle every day, light activities with extreme power efficiency.”

This would entail in quicker app launch times, better multi-tasking and a generally smoother user experience, according to Huawei.

“At Huawei, we want to create an elite mobile ecosystem and offer products that not only offer distinctive user experience but also enhance the way consumer connects with each other. Being a pioneer in AI with last year, we are thrilled to launch the Kirin 980 equipped with the industry’s first dual NPU, one of industry’s first.
