Google to fire more employees soon?

It appears Google is following tech companies like Meta and Amazon when it comes to layoffs. The latest report suggests that one of the biggest tech giants is preparing for another round of layoffs soon. In one of the latest interviews, CEO Sundar Pichai hinted that more layoffs could happen at Google very soon.

In a discussion with the Wall Street Journal, Pichai said that Google is “very, very focused” on their current opportunities and also that a “lot of work” is “left”. The Google CEO highlighted that the company is prioritizing its most important areas and moving people accordingly.

A couple of months ago, Pichai said that the tech company aims to be 20 per cent more efficient. In a recent interview, the tech company CEO said that Google is working towards being more efficient and “literally looking at every aspect of what we do”. Pichai also said that the company is working on re-engineering its cost base in a durable way. He further noted that progress has been made but still, a lot more work is left to be done.

“We’re very, very focused on this set of opportunities we have, and I think there’s a lot of work left. There’s also an important inflection point with AI. Where we can, we are definitely prioritizing and moving people to our most important areas, so that is ongoing work,” Pichai said.

The Google CEO also added, “we are trying to accomplish that across many different ways. We’re literally looking at every aspect of what we do, and as we said on our last earnings call, we’re thinking about how to re-engineer our cost base in a durable way. We are definitely being focused on creating durable savings. We are pleased with the progress, but there’s more work left to do.”

While Pichai did not confirm or deny the possibility of a second round of layoffs, he did clarify that the company is focused on improving efficiency and prioritizing important areas.

Now, this comes after the tech giant fired around 12000 employees globally earlier this year in January. Google started by firing employees in the United States, followed by Indian employees. If reports are to be believed, the company has fired around 850 employees in India. However, the company hasn’t officially given any numbers yet.

Google is making several other organizational changes to cut costs and make the company more efficient than ever before. Recent reports revealed that Google has paused offering snacks and staplers to employees. In fact, the company has also asked people to share desks. India Today
