Global HDI PCB Market Surpasses US$10 Billion In Value, Says TPCA

The worldwide market for high-density interconnect (HDI) PCBs came to more than US$10 billion in production value in 2018, with Taiwan accounting for about 40% of the total value, according to data compiled by Taiwan Printed Circuit Association (TPCA).

Compeq Manufacturing, Tripod Technology, Unimicron Technology and Zhen Ding Technology are among the major Taiwan-based HDI PCB manufacturers.

Sales generated from the smartphone sector accounted for as high as nearly 80% of Taiwan’s overall HDI PCB industry output value, TPCA indicated. With smartphones being the single largest target application, Taiwan’s HDI PCB sector remains an oligopoly where only a few large-scale firms are capable of winning orders from smartphone vendors, TPCA said.

Nevertheless, a number of small- and medium-scale firms, such as Unitech Printed Circuit Board and Dynamic Electronics, have built a certain presence in the high-end automotive HDI PCB segment, TPCA noted. HDI PCB demand for automotive applications is promising.

Wearables and TWS devices are other target markets of Taiwan’s second-tier HDI PCB suppliers, which are striving to tap huge business opportunities arising from IoT applications, TPCA said.

The emerging 5G and AI technologies are also set to stimulate further HDI PCB demand for applications such as notebooks, TPCA added.―Digitimes
