FET Adopts 3-Pronged Approach For 5G

Taiwan-based Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) is adopting a three-pronged approach – promoting new business, developing innovative applications and pushing multiple collaborations – as it steps up its 5G deployments, according to company president Chee Ching.

The new business will focus on promoting services related to big data analysis, AI, information security, cloud and IoT applications, Ching said, expecting this business to account for 15% of the company’s total revenues in 2020.

It saw a number of segments in this business grow robustly in February, when revenues generated from information communication services rose 294% on year, IoT business expanded 598%, system integration services jumped 103% and information security increased 88%.

FET will also team up with partners from diverse industries to develop 5G applications for smart retail, industrial dedicated 5G networks for vertical applications, remoted medical care and AI-based smart manufacturing, Ching added.

FET is also incorporating its related AI and IoT technologies into the associate companies of the Far Eastern Group, looking to release AI-based textile manufacturing equipment in the second half of 2020 and integrating the online shopping platform and physical stores of the group’s department store business.

The company expects to kick off commercial 5G services in the third quarter of 2020, having secured 80 MHz bandwidths in the 3.5 GHz band of the 5G spectrum and 400 MHz bandwidths in the 28 GHz band.
