Ethiopian Govt. Says Telecoms Sector Requires USD 2.2 Billion Investments

Ethiopia could require as much as USD 2.2 billion to modernise its telecoms sector, Reuters reported, citing finance minister Eyob Tekalign Tolina. The minister said the need for telecoms infrastructure investment is huge and that the country’s public investment has run out of steam.

Tolina said the government is not going to do unsustainable public investment. Tolina said the government’s reforms aim to encourage competition and foreign investment, noting that the telecoms sector, long dominated by state monopoly Ethio Telecom, must be the priority.―Telecompaper
