Establishment of boundary conditions crucial to ensure that 5G sites and satellite gateway ground stations can coexist

Establishment of “boundary conditions” will be crucial to ensure that 5G sites and satellite gateway ground stations can coexist with minimal interference in the millimeter wave band (27.5-28.5 GHz), said Bharat Bhatia, President of ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI).

He further said, “It is important to establish necessary boundary conditions where such ground stations can be located so that they are sufficiently away from city centers where 5G will be rolled out by the operators in this frequency band.”

Several studies conducted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have concluded that the coexistence of a satellite gateway ground station operating in the 26 GHz band with 5G mobile services can be achieved by maintaining separation distances of less than 100 meters and up to about 10 kilometers.

“While the ITU investigations were conducted for the 26 GHz band, the situation will not be much different at 28 GHz,” the IAFI Director added.
