Ericsson And VimpelCom Join Forces For Development of 5G And IoT Technologies

Ericsson is teaming up with Beeline’s VimpelCom for the development of 5G and internet of things (IoT) technologies over the next two years.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, VimpelCom is a leading telecom and digital services provider that became Veon last year to reinvent itself as a tech company.

On the other hand, Ericsson provides information and communication technology (ICT) and is currently leading the 5G standardization globally.

With the partnership, Ericsson and VimpelCom will make the spectrum utilization and network implementation of 5G networks more flexible and efficient. A Massive MIMO will be deployed on Beeline’s networks for development of 5G demonstration clusters.

The companies will work on joint projects to prepare Beeline’s networks for 5G. The joint projects include scaling of LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro technologies and focusing on 4G standard.

On the IoT front, Ericsson and VimpelCom are planning to create an IoT Accelerator Lab. This lab will be targeted for IoT developers and other solutions based on Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M in urban conditions.

Another key part of the partnership is testing of an IoT proof of concept. The companies have launched an open zone for IoT testing in central Novosibirsk and on Akademgorodok Technology Park (Academpark) premises.

Service providers trust in the potential of IoT, and describe IoT technologies (like NB-IoT and Cat-M1) and 5G technologies as the game-changer in IoT landscape. According to an Ericsson report, 70% of the telecom service providers focus on cellular IoT. They believe that cellular IoT can improve battery life, reduce device costs, and enable new use cases.

“By 2021, we will be trialing key 5G technologies, deploying IoT technological clusters and developing new approaches to network architecture to enable 5G services on VimpelCom’s network,” said Sebastian Tolstoy, Head of Ericsson in Russia.

“Our partnership will accelerate VimpelCom’s network innovations on the way to 5G, improve the quality of service, and enable new customer services to be offered based on LTE already now.”

Beeline has been already working on development of processing technology and big data analysis. It previously collaborated with residents of Academpark for the purpose.

Partnership with Ericsson will help Beeline to continue its focus on deployment of advanced technologies on network, as well as development of digital services.

“5G standard is the future that has yet to come, and it is not clear enough yet how it will influence everyday life of our customers. Nevertheless, for our company, as a major market player, it is important to prepare Beeline network for advance technologies that require a new architecture that is fundamentally different from previous generations,” said Vasyl Latsanych, VimpelCom CEO.

“We are upgrading our network together with our partners and developing new services to provide our customers access to the best and modern Beeline network.” – Wire 19
