Equinix To Invest USD 160 Million In Sydney

Equinix is investing $160 million in its eighth IBX data center in Sydney, Australia.

The facility, codenamed SY5, will be located in Alexandria, about 2.5 miles from Sydney’s central business district. It will offer more than 260,000 square feet of colocation space once fully built.

Equinix’s largest Aussie facility

The first phase of the $160 million South Sydney facility is expected to open in late 2019, with an initial capacity of 1,825 cabinets.

SY5 IBX will be the largest facility for Equinix in Australia to date, with 9,225 cabinets when finished.

When it opens, Equinix will have a national footprint of 16 IBX data centers across Sydney, Melbourne,Perth, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane.

The upcoming facility will be connected to the Southern Cross trans-Pacific telecommunications network. This submarine cable connects Australia to Guam, as well as other cables leading to New Zealand, Singapore and the US.

Over the past three years, Equinix has invested more than $800 million into the building and expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

The company currently runs 40 IBX data centers across 12 APAC markets. This January, it announced plans to build its fourth IBX data center in Singapore and enter a new market in Seoul, South Korea.

Last year Equinix doubled the capacity of its SY4 facility in Sydney from 1500 to 3000 cabinets.

Jeremy Deutsch, managing director for Equinix Australia, said: “We’re thrilled to continue an exciting period of growth for Equinix globally with the addition of SY5 IBX in Sydney. SY5 further enables us to offer scalable digital infrastructure and on-demand interconnection both in the local market and across the Asia-Pacific region via a single platform.”―DCD
