DoT Seeks Clarification from TRAI on Wi-Fi Calling Service
Though the central government gave the go-ahead to use of internet telephony in the country last week, consumers will have to wait much longer for the launch of Wi-Fi-based calling or Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi). The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is now looking for clarification from the telecom regulator on the routing of international voice calls over the public internet. Top telecom operators Reliance Jio Infocomm, Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel are already planning to offer these internet calling services through the `Voice over WiFi’ route, once the policy is notified.
