DoT responds to COAI that govt intervene in equipment theft cases

The Department of Telecommunications has very promptly responded to COAI, which has written to authorities asking them to take strict measures against telecom equipment theft cases that are taking place across the country.

Nearly 15,000 Bharti Airtel devices (telecom towers) were stolen, followed by Reliance Jio’s 1,748 and Vodafone Idea’s 368. As per the industry estimates, the telcos are facing losses of up to Rs 700 crore due to these thefts. Most thefts occurred in the states of Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. Delhi and Punjab come next. In the last two months, 2,000 units of theft were reported only in Uttar Pradesh. There have been over 570 thefts in Noida and 390 in Ghaziabad.

DoT issued a directive on May 27, instructing its field enforcement units in all the LSAs to conduct quarterly reviews of the telecom gear theft situation with national law enforcement agencies.

The department has called on its enforcement units to alert all state police departments across India immediately.

As per COAI’s request, this issue will also be raised in the State BroadBand Committee (SBC) meeting. Another measure suggested was to discuss this issue with state police and law enforcement agencies in a quarterly review.
