DNB and Shopee partner to boost 5G adoption for Malaysian MSMEs

Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and e-commerce leader Shopee partnered to encourage 5G adoption amongst micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Malaysia, through a campaign offering special 5G packages by telcos.

Officiated by YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital Malaysia, the collaboration was announced at DNB’s My5G Portal experience centre earlier today. Also in attendance were Mr Ma Sivanesan, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of Digital, as well as Encik Nasution Mohamed, Chief Operating Officer of DNB. Representing Shopee were Mr Tan Ming Kit, Chief Marketing Officer at Shopee Malaysia and Mr Terence Siau, SEA Country Director.

Leveraging Shopee’s existing 2 million local sellers driving Made-in-Malaysia goods, the initiative seeks to increase the subscription of 5G services amongst the sellers to enable them to market their products and services ‘live’ to their customers on the ‘Shopee Live’ platform through high-definition video, greatly improving the customer’s shopping experience. By signing up with 5G packages, sellers would not only have access to DNB’s world-class 5G network, recognised for its speed, ultra-low latency and reliability, but also earn RM110,000 worth of Shopee coins.

The global network insights company Ookla in their Q4 2023 Speedtest Intelligence data reported that Malaysia’s median 5G speed stands at an impressive 451.79Mbps, ranking it 4th in the world and the fastest amongst Southeast Asian countries. In the same quarter, Malaysia’s 5G network was accorded Ookla’s highest Consistency Score globally.

Speaking at the event, YB Gobind praised the initiative to drive digitalization amongst micro, small and medium enterprises, saying, “There are currently over 1.17 million MSME firms in Malaysia, accounting for 97.4% of the total number of businesses in the country. These small businesses contribute 38.4% of the nation’s GDP, or RM580 billion, and employ 7.59 million workers, so it is imperative to ensure that the industry remains competitive and thriving.

“The Ministry of Digital was set up to drive the government’s vision to increase economic prosperity via digitalisation; through collaborative programmes with all the players in the ecosystem. Partnerships like this are key to catalyse the digital adoption, and I hope to see more.”

Nasution Mohamed, Chief Operating Officer of DNB said, “Malaysia’s 5G network now covers 81.5% of populated areas, and as of end-April 2024, Malaysia has recorded 13.2 million 5G service subscriptions, representing an adoption rate of 39.2 per cent.

“5G technology benefits enterprises of various sizes, including MSMEs. Our 5G network’s performance and reliability provides retail MSME sellers with the mobility to engage their audiences seamlessly, through high-definition video streaming, enhancing their customers’ buying experience.”

Tan Ming Kit, Chief Marketing Officer at Shopee Malaysia said, “Shopee is thrilled to join forces with DNB to accelerate 5G adoption among Malaysian retail MSMEs. We believe 5G represents a significant leap in connectivity, empowering MSMEs with the necessary tools to thrive in today’s dynamic digital landscape. Through this collaboration, Shopee will incentivize MSMEs with RM110,000 worth of Shopee Coins for embracing 5G packages, enabling them for growth and real-time engagement on Shopee Live. Together with DNB, we’re eager to lead the charge in spearheading a new era of digital transformation for Malaysian businesses.”
