DIPA writes to DoT, police refusing to file FIRs

The telecom infrastructure industry is facing a harrowing time. Electronic equipment, battery bank cells, power cables, AC/PP/tower, etc., from tower sites are continuing to be stolen. And, the local police are refusing to file an FIR, with the result that the companies are not able to claim insurance on the equipment.

DIPA has written to Neeraj Kumar, Deputy Director General and Mission Director (Broadband Mission), DoT requesting action. “We request your urgent intervention into the matter to direct the police authorities/law enforcement agencies and district administration regarding ensuring the security of telecom towers in states and also take requisite action against the miscreants who are involved in the theft,” writes TR Dua, Director-General, DIPA.

Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) estimates that in FY24, the companies lost Rs 150 crore of equipment. It is more rampant in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh, Punjab, and Delhi.

DoT has instructed its enforcement units to alert all state police departments across India.
