Coronavirus Scare: India Postpones Summit On AI To October

Worried about the rising number of cases of Covid-19, the Indian government RAISE–Responsible AI for Social Empowerment) 2020 summit on AI (Artificial Intelligence)–to 5-6 October.

Previously scheduled in April, the summit was to slated to be attended by academics, AI startups and big tech firm such as Intel, Microsoft and AWS. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was supposed to inaugurate the event.

“The registrations are open for all participants and the process will remain the same as before. All AI startups are welcome to participate through the same procedure for the Startup Pitchfest. The step to postpone the Summit is a public health measure for containment and mitigation of the current COVID-19 outbreak,” Abhishek Singh, president and chief executive, National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY ) said in a press statement.

All major tech events including the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona and Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles have been cancelled this year following the outbreak. Google’s I/O, Facebook’s F8 and Apple’s WWDC developer events will now be held online only.

The Startup Pitchfest is an expo event, to be held on the sidelines of the summit, for AI startups from India to showcase their products and attract new investments.

AI has been a key talkpoint for the central government which intends to use it in several existing and new projects such as the proposed national policy for statistics and the Ayushmaan Bharat scheme.
