Competition In 5G Phone Market Heating Up

Competition in the 5G phone market is set to heat up as more handset vendors have launched 5G-enabled models in line with the inauguration of commercial 5G networks around the globe, according to industry sources.

In particular, competition between Samsung Electronics and Huawei is currently the focus of market attention, said the sources.

Samsung appears to have made a preemptive presence in the 5G sector, leveraging the launch of its Galaxy S10 5G and Note 10 5G in a number of markets including the US, UK, Australia, Finland and the home market.

Total subscribers of 5G services in Korea have reached over two million since telecom operators there including SKT, KT and LG Uplus kicked off their commercial 5G networks in April, indicated the sources.

In China, Huawei has already launched four 5G-focused models, with sales of its Mate 20 X reportedly already exceeding one million units, said the sources.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has launched its Mi Mix 3 and Oppo has rolled out Reno 2, with both models supporting 5G technology.

Another China-based vendor, Vivo, has unveiled its first 5G-enabled phone, the iQOO Pro, which carries a price tag below CNY5,000 (US$699), noted the sources.―Digitimes
