CHT, HTC to jointly offer VR applications via 5G

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) and HTC have announced an alliance to jointly launch VR application services that will leverage the traits of high-speed, low latency and wide bandwidth of 5G networks coupled with HTC’s VR platform and related technologies.

The alliance comes after the two firms tied up recently to jointly offer VR-based video conference systems enabling clients to conduct tri-site teleconferences as a means to comply with quarantine measures in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

To cash in on the kick-off of 5G commercial operations by CHT in July, the two firms decided to expand their VR streaming applications to include digital games, videos, tour guiding, education and art events so as to enrich CHT’s commercial 5G services, according to Chen Ming-shih, president of CHT’s mobile business group.

To further enrich its VR content, HTC has also recently joined forces with visual effect specialist Hi-Organic to produce its first work for XR interactive music, allowing users to watch music programs with a VR headset and to enjoy immersive interactive experience.
